How Much Does an EICR Cost

The Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a mandatory certificate that details the condition of the electrical installations on a given property. An installation in this case is any electrical equipment whose power is supplied through the electrical meter. The purpose of the EICR is to ensure a property's electrical installations comply with current safety standards and can only be issued by a qualified electrician. Below we will take a close look at the EICR and answer the question of How much does an EICR cost?

Who Can Conduct an EICR Inspection?

Only a qualified electrician or electrical engineer may conduct an electrical safety check and issue an Electrical Installation Condition Report or EICR.

What is Inspected During an Electrical Safety Check?

  • The Grounding and Bonding of The Electrical System - Over time groundings and bondings within an electrical system tend to loosen. When this happens it creates myriad potential hazards. The electrician will check all groundings and bondings within the system to ensure their integrity.
  • The Fuse Board - The fuse board or fuse box is the point through which electricity is distributed to the various installations on the property. Any short circuits, wear and tear or errors on the fuse board can have far-reaching consequences.
  • Wall Outlets, Switches, Light Fixtures - During the electrical safety inspection minor components of the system including switches, outlets and light fixtures will also be checked to ensure their integrity. This is especially important because these are common contact points between people and the electrical system as a whole.
  • Wiring - Over the years faulty wiring has been responsible for countless fires resulting in injury and loss of life. The electrician will inspect all the wiring on the property to ensure it complies with current safety standards.
  • The Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) - The job of the AFCI is to intervene to prevent dangerous electrical arcs. They are important in ensuring the overall safety of the building’s electrical circuits.
  • Damage and Defects - The electrician will keep their eyes open throughout the electrical safety inspection process for any defects or damage to any system components and will note them on the final report.
  • Areas That Need Upgrading - As more is known and better products and practices come online electrical safety regulations change. During the inspection, the electrician will look for any components of the system that do not comply with current safety regulations.

What Happens Once the Inspection is Complete?

Once the inspection is complete the electrician will issue a final report. The report will classify the inspected property as either:

  • C1 - Dangerous: The installation is considered dangerous and immediate action is required.
  • C2 - Potentially dangerous: Action is urgently required because there is the risk of injury.
  • C3 - Improvement recommended: Overall the system is generally safe but improvements may be recommended.
  • FI - Further investigation required: Further investigation of the property’s electrical system needs to be conducted without delay.

C1, C2 and FI are considered failing marks meaning action is required before an Electrical Safety Certificate can be issued.

C3 is considered a satisfactory grade meaning an Electrical Safety Certificate can be issued without delay.
